Filtered Thoughts:
It has taken Metroid: Other M 31 weeks to cross one million reported game-play hours, and while that's not super for what I would consider a main Nintendo franchise; I think it's decent enough for the game, considering the wide-range of opinions on it.
It's been interesting watching Metroid: Other M's Amazon.com sale price over the last 4 months. In the last report, Amazon.com had the sale price of Metroid: Other M at under $30. For several weeks during November and December, and for just a bit into the new year, Amazon.com had the price below $30; then the price went back to $49.99 and stayed there for a while. Just a few days ago, Amazon.com dropped the price on Metroid: Other M back below $30.
I don't think Nintendo has given an update on how Metroid: Other M's sales were throughout the holidays(if so, I didn't find it), but seeing the game discounted below $30 is something that is rarely done with main Nintendo franchises. Mario Wii games, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and even Super Smash Bros. Brawl are still very close to their MSRPs of $49.99; so, I'm not sure if Nintendo is allowing Amazon.com to drop the price simply to clear Metroid: Other M from inventory, or if they are still printing the game and trying to reach a certain sales goal with it, just at a lower price.
If any of you didn't see the television commercial Nintendo ran advertising Metroid: Other M, you can watch it right here:

Have any of you been playing Metroid: Other M in the last 4 months? If you just started playing it in the last 4 months, what do you think of the game? If you completed Metroid: Other M once, have you gone back to play it again?

I finished the game twice, once in each difficulty, with 100% on Normal. I've been meaning to go back to it soon, but other games have gotten in the way.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, I enjoyed Metroid: Other M. I know that some people didn't, and that's all right, but I just don't feel like it deserved how much vitriol it got.
ReplyDeleteI do think that having each person play the game on average for a bit over 15 hours is not too bad, though. I really hope that Nintendo doesn't let the whole situation with Other M burn them on the franchise as a whole.
Samus is one of my favorite characters, for sure.
Did you get a chance to play Other M, Coffee?

i finished the game once. then i was so disappointed that i resold the game.
ReplyDeleteplayed it on easy to completion, and then came back to 100% the game and replayed a few sections. For a while there I really couldn't put the game down, and that to me is the mark of a quality experience.
ReplyDeleteAlso spent a while with the game's movie mode and showed it off a bit. I took the whole thing pretty slow in order to soak in the atmosphere and according to my nintendo channel have somehow accumulated 40 hrs (!) with it already. I definitely intend to come back to it in the future too.
It is not a perfect game, but still I think it does a fantastic job of defining a bold and fresh direction for the series which I really hope will be explored further!
For that reason alone I think it's worth a buy at these prices (not to mention, it is FUN lol)
Less than $30 for a first party Nintendo game is a rarity, they know it didn't meet expectations. That and the survey I filled out give me hope that this series will come back better than ever.
ReplyDeleteI liked the play style, didn't mind the where's waldo bits, though they could be better, and the acting... well, I'll stop there.
I 100% normal, I'm now stuck about halfway through hard mode. Its a good challenge, I'll be back to it someday.
I really wanted to like this game...I just couldn't. It tried to do too much and compromised its identity which I think was its greatest weakness. It's not a 'bad' game...but it is inconsistent in terms of quality. No sense of solitude which has dominated all of the Metroid games.
ReplyDeleteI will say that despite my 'meh' vibe from the game I did find the ending and the storyline to be excellent. It was the execution of said story where the game lost its momentum.
This game's actually going to be one of my next reviews, so good timing, heh. I bought this game not too long after it came out - I found it used at Gamestop and grabbed it despite the wide range of reviews. Overall, I'll say I liked it. I finally beat the game around Christmas/New Years. I didn't go back and try to do the completion to 100%, though I did putz around with it a bit after beating it. I didn't have the drive to go ahead and give it another run at harder difficulty or try to get to 100%, but I'm glad to see the options were there for the very reasons shown above - a lot of people were interested in doing so. I did however trade the game in not too long ago (actually toward Dragon Age 2) - but it didn't net as much as the usual Nintendo first party games do. Seems most of the first party ones land around 20-25, this only grabbed like 14.
ReplyDeleteThat's great to hear. Sounds like Other M isn't quite the sales flop that I thought it was. Still sounds like it might have been a loss overall for the budget it potentially had. Shame, since I thought it was a great experience and it was so much a kind of presentation that people always say Nintendo ought to do more of.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I completed the game on normal, I started it again on difficult, and believe I played for an hour to an hour and a half, at which point I'm sure I ended up with another game that pulled me away from it. I'd have to go back and check which game that was....
@juegosmajicos:
ReplyDeleteDo you know about how many hours the two play-throughs took you?
@BitNick:
"Did you get a chance to play Other M, Coffee?"
I haven't actually. I usually put that in each post, just as an update...and I left it out of this one. I really, really, really enjoyed Metroid Prime 3, so I'm interested in Metroid: Other M, just because it's in the Samus universe.

The 2D-3D game-play elements are what I really wanted to try out in the game, and I was glad to see Team Ninja and Nintendo try a new take with a 2D game, using a 3D element like they did.

"I 100% normal, I'm now stuck about halfway through hard mode. Its a good challenge, I'll be back to it someday."
Maybe you know, and the others that have completed, but do you actually get anything extra for completing it with 100%? Like I know in Metroid Prime 3 there were things you could unlock in the game.

"It was the execution of said story where the game lost its momentum."
When you say execution, are you meaning the way the story was presented, or the way the game played out?

Ouch! I guess at this price, it wouldn't be so bad, but if you paid $40-50 for it, the $14 definitely is low.
Also, I'll be keeping an eye out for your review!

Was there an option to skip cut-scenes in the game? I don't really remember people talking about it...
