GoldenEye 007 vs Call of Duty: Black Ops - Data Report

We last looked at a direct comparison of GoldenEye 007's and Call of Duty: Black Ops' reported game-play hours back in December, on Christmas day!
In that report, Call of Duty: Black Ops had more hours reported than GoldenEye 007, but Black Ops had fewer players reporting the data, than GoldenEye.

In the 92 days since the last report, have GoldenEye 007 players kept pace with Call of Duty: Black Ops players on the Wii?  Let's take a look!

Hours shown are for United States of America Wii owners, not world-wide.

Approx. Number of Players Reporting Data:
GoldenEye 007 now has 49,117 Wii owners reporting their game-play hours, through the Wii's Nintendo Channel.
Call of Duty: Black Ops now has 64,631 Wii owners reporting their play-time data.

GoldenEye 007's average play-time per session is just over 2 Hours 10 Minutes.

Call of Duty: Black Ops now has 3,248,239 Total Hours of game-play reported, an increase of 2,907,890 Total Hours since December 20.
Black Ops' average play-time is now 50 Hours 16 Minutes "Per person" reporting data, which is 22 Hours 37 Minutes higher than its average from December 20.

Filtered Thoughts:
This week, GoldenEye 007 crossed one million reported game-play hours, while Call of Duty: Black Ops crossed three million reported game-play hours.
I think it's pretty incredible that Black Ops players have more than three times the reported number of hours played, that GoldenEye players have.
I really expected GoldenEye to stay within half the number of hours reported as Black Ops, but the data is pretty clear that Black Ops is being played a lot more than GoldenEye.

While GoldenEye isn't winning in the hours reported, or players reporting data, its "professional" review score is slightly higher than Black Ops', so it has at least one bragging right!
While both games seem to be providing Wii owners with many hours of fun, I think the real winner here is Activision, as it published both games.

While I haven't played Black Ops on the Wii, I do own it on my PS3 and I finished the single-player campaign about 5 weeks ago.  I own GoldenEye 007 for the Wii, but I haven't played it in a while, because I'm still working on my New Year's resolution.
If any of you are still playing GoldenEye's online multi-player regularly, feel free to add my friend code for the game, 2043-7355-3797.  If you're hopping online to play, feel free to send me an email to Scott(@)CoffeewithGames.com, and if I'm available I'll hop online as well.
Also, feel free to share your friend codes with each other in the comments below.

Questions:
Have any of you been playing GoldenEye 007 and/or Call of Duty: Black Ops on the Wii regularly?  If so, what rank are you in the games' online multi-player?
I'm right around level 20 in GoldenEye 007's online.

If anybody is interested in either GoldenEye 007 or Call of Duty: Black Ops for the Wii, you can see sale prices for both games on Amazon.com linked below:

  1. Ah, a battle for the ages, this one....

Sadly, it would appear that nostalgia can only carry your game 1/3 of the way when you are up against the comparative brand strength of Call of Duty.

Interesting stats, though, and both games have fun to offer. Out of curiousity, which game do you like better, being an owner of both?

  2. Interesting figures, but they landed about where I would have guessed. As BitNick pointed out, Golden Eye has some quality nostalgia going for it, but that only helps carry it with part of a market. My son only knows about Golden Eye because I kept a bunch of my old systems and games around over the years. None of his friends had ever played the original. However, all of them knew of and owned several CoD games. I did come close to grabbing Golden Eye for my Wii recently - Gamestop had a couple of copies, but I decided to work on my current game backlog and figure it'll prolly be as cheap if not a bit more so in a few months when I've gotten through some more games. :)

  3. Hey coffee ,I got black ops im prestige 15 and almost have everything u can buy on the game unlocked.what made me buy BO instead of golden eye was that at the trailer it looked like golden eye was to much old fashioned looking and if what I have seen it has no kill streaks which is something that make BO very fun.Im very active on BO but it might end soon cause im looking forward to the conduit 2 which looks to be an amazing game + treyarch have really pissed me off cause they did not put any effort on wii golden guns + no DLC yet and also to much hacking and many other things on BO I just hope conduit 2 is a much better game than BO.

Golden Eye does have kill streaks. You just need to look into it a bit more.

Overall, I assume that Golden Eye is less popular is because the original was made 14 years ago and the new generation probably never heard of it...despite it was the game that shaped the FPS games of today.

  5. @BitNick:
I think the nostalgia factor played for and against GoldenEye, as I know of at least three people that got the game and didn't like it, because it wasn't exactly the same as the original.
I think all three of those people have now traded the game back in.

As for which game I like better, they both have pluses and minuses.
GoldenEye's single-player campaign has different objectives on each difficulty setting, so I think that one has more replay value as for single-player campaigns.
The Call of Duty games, in general, have the multi-player system pretty well done.
The leveling up in Call of Duty: Black Ops' multi-player is faster, as the leveling up in GoldenEye is actually really, really, really slow...I seriously doubt 10% of GoldenEye multi-player players have reached the top level yet...I would be interested to know it though.

I was thinking about trading off Black Ops, but I'm going to keep it, just because of the sheer number of people that own it, I don't think I'll have an issue finding an online multi-player game, if I ever wanted to hop online real fast.

I guess I would pick GoldenEye as my favorite game overall though, because the multi-player is fun(though not as rewarding perhaps), and the single-player is a little better than Black Ops' I believe.

    @Chalgyr:
The one area I thought that GoldenEye on the Wii had a 1-up over Black Ops Wii, was the marketing.
As usual Activision style, there was little to no information on Black Ops on the Wii, while they were more than willing to talk about GoldenEye for months.
They also had the GoldenEye commercial for it, though I'm guessing Black Ops Wii got credit at the end of all the regular Black Ops commercials...but I don't know.

    @ea]azteca:
"I got black ops im prestige 15..."
How many hours did this take you, about?

As for looking forward to Conduit 2, I would be cautious with it, as I picked up the first one day one, but the online in that game was poorer than the online in Call of Duty: World at War, that had released 7 months prior.
I am really hoping Conduit 2 is a solid game, that hopefully won't need much support after it's released; but if it does, let's hope patches can fix whatever issues arise from it.

Also, when you said, "I have seen it has no kill streaks..."
Are you talking about the ability to get special perks, like in Black Ops, during matches? Like calling in a Spy Plane, or calling in dogs?

    @Anonymous from March 27:
I think you and Chalgyr are on the same page, about the new generation not even knowing about it.

"...despite it was the game that shaped the FPS games of today."
I still wonder why FPS games, even GoldenEye Wii, don't have certain things the original GoldenEye had...

Thank you all for the comments! I really appreciate them, and if anybody else has feedback on the games, feel free to add to the conversation/discussion going on.

  6. picked up goldeneye the other day.. havent had a chance to play it much yet.. maybe an hour or so... and i havent played any online yet(will tonight hopefully).

so far i like GE more than BO.. i got rid of black ops not long back because of the update problem that wouldnt allow me to connect online.. the forums said we would have to wait for an update.. so after a few days of nothing i decided that i wasnt gonna wait anymore.. so i sold it and got GE.

if you want to have an online match, send me an email bro.. i should be ready for online in a few days :)

  7. Another area where GE is definitely winning over BO (at least the Wii version) is in sales.
I am quite happy about that seeing as it is an exclusive for the system.
